The Latest Updates on Alabama’s Medical Marijuana Program

After years of delays, Alabama’s medical marijuana program is finally moving forward, and for patients across the state, relief is finally in sight. With new rules taking effect, dispensary licenses advancing, and products potentially hitting shelves soon, it’s an exciting and critical time to get informed and prepared.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest developments in Alabama’s medical cannabis rollout, and why preparing to get your medical marijuana card now is more important than ever.

Key Progress in Licensing and Access

As of June 2025, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) has made major progress toward launching the state’s long-awaited program. After legal disputes stalled license distribution in 2023 and early 2024, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission is now actively issuing licenses to dispensaries, cultivators, and integrated facilities, a big step forward in getting products to patients.

In mid-June, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission granted a testing laboratory license to a Foley-based Green Health Laboratories, ensuring product safety and regulatory compliance. Testing is a core component of Alabama’s medical program, which emphasizes strict oversight on potency, quality, and contaminants.

Dispensary licenses are also moving ahead. According to the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission, licensed dispensaries could begin opening their doors as soon as late summer 2025, with product availability expected shortly after. As legal access becomes a reality, having your medical marijuana card will ensure you're ready to purchase as soon as dispensaries launch.

New Rules Take Effect July 1

Beginning July 1, 2025, Alabama is implementing updated THC product regulations that standardize labeling and safety requirements. These changes are designed to align medical cannabis products with pharmaceutical-grade expectations, offering patients more transparency around what they’re consuming.

The rules will also make it easier for law enforcement and healthcare providers to identify state-approved medical products. For patients, this means greater confidence in the consistency and safety of what they’re using, but it also reinforces the need to be a registered patient to legally access marijuana.

At Alabama Marijuana Card, we will be able to help patients navigate these evolving rules and ensure that they’re fully compliant. Once we can start seeing patients, we will connect you with one of our qualified physicians who will evaluate your medical condition and certify you for medical marijuana if you qualify. Our team will also be available to assist with your state application.

Legal Challenges Still Loom, But Progress Prevails

While Alabama’s medical marijuana program is finally making headway, it hasn’t been without ongoing legal hurdles. Several lawsuits have challenged the fairness and transparency of how licenses were awarded, particularly for dispensaries and integrated facilities. As a result, some licenses remain under judicial review.

One major legal development involves a group of parents suing the state, arguing that delays in launching the program are harming children with qualifying medical conditions. The case has gained attention for highlighting the real-world impact of administrative holdups and is now scheduled to be heard in Alabama courts, applying pressure on regulators to accelerate access.

Despite these obstacles, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission has continued to make incremental progress. Licenses in uncontested categories, like testing laboratories, have been awarded, allowing the infrastructure for safe product rollout to begin. And while some facility licenses are still tied up in court, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission is preparing to issue others as legal challenges are resolved.

These legal issues are a reminder of how complex and closely monitored Alabama’s medical marijuana rollout remains. Each step forward brings patients closer to safe, legal access to the treatment they’ve long been waiting for.

Why Getting Your Medical Marijuana Card Now Matters

Even with dispensaries not yet open, preparing to get a medical card and reserving your medical marijuana card appointment early can help you avoid delays once products are available. Having your certification means you’ll be one of the first eligible patients able to purchase medical marijuana in Alabama.

With more than a dozen qualifying conditions and more coming under review, many Alabamians already meet the criteria for medical marijuana use, including chronic pain, PTSD, cancer, and more. Our goal is to ensure that every eligible patient can access relief legally, safely, and as soon as possible.
