Alabama’s Medical Marijuana Program Is Moving Forward

Alabama’s medical marijuana program is finally taking real steps forward! After years of delays, doctors in the state can now apply for the permits they need to recommend medical marijuana to patients. The state has also identified cities where medical marijuana dispensaries will be allowed to open.

While patients still cannot buy products just yet, these updates show that Alabama is closer than ever to launching a working medical marijuana system.

Doctors Can Now Apply to Recommend Medical Marijuana

The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners is now accepting applications from doctors who want to recommend medical marijuana. This permit is required before any physician can legally help patients access marijuana for medical use.

To qualify, doctors must:

  • Hold an active Alabama medical license

  • Complete a required training course focused on medical marijuana treatment

  • Apply for and receive approval from the state

Once approved, these doctors will be able to certify patients who have qualifying medical conditions under Alabama law for medical marijuana use. This is the first and one of the most important steps in the entire program, because patients cannot get a medical marijuana card without a certified doctor’s recommendation.

Our team at Alabama Marijuana Card will start seeing patients soon! If you’re interested in getting your medical marijuana card, now is a great time to prepare. You can reserve an appointment with us and save $25 when patient visits officially begin.

Cities Approved for Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

The state recently approved locations where medical marijuana dispensaries can operate. These dispensaries will be the only legal places where registered patients can buy medical marijuana products.

The cities that are set to have dispensaries include:

  • Athens

  • Attalla

  • Birmingham

  • Cullman

  • Daphne

  • Demopolis

  • Mobile

  • Montgomery

  • Oxford

  • Owens Cross Roads

  • Talladega

At first, medical marijuana dispensaries will only be located in the cities approved by the state. Other Alabama cities will not have dispensaries right away. As the medical marijuana program continues to develop, there is hope that additional cities will be approved for dispensaries in the future, expanding access for patients across the state.

What Still Needs to Happen Before Patients Can Buy Marijuana

Even though progress is being made, the program is not fully active yet. A few key steps still need to happen before patients can walk into a dispensary and make a purchase.

  • Marijuana doctors must complete training and get certified

  • Dispensary  inspections must take place before they can open their doors

  • The patient registration process through the state must become fully ready and available

Medical marijuana sales will begin once all of these pieces are in place, which state officials expect will happen sometime this year.

What This Means for Alabama Patients

For prospective marijuana patients, this is encouraging news. Legal access to medical marijuana is no longer just an idea; it’s finally becoming a reality.

Soon, qualifying patients will be able to:

Medical marijuana can be used to help manage serious health conditions, and having a card allows access and provides legal protection for those patients.

Alabama’s medical marijuana program is moving slowly, but it is moving forward. Doctors can now apply for permits, dispensary locations are set, and patients are getting closer to safe and legal access.
