Medical Marijuana in Alabama - Counties and Businesses Showing Support

Just this week, the medical marijuana program in Alabama entered a new and exciting phase. Businesses have begun notifying the state that they’d like to participate in the program, and since September 1st, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission has received 179 requests for business licenses.

Who Are the Applicants?

Those applying can seek licenses as cultivators, processors, secure transporters, state testing labs, and dispensaries, or they can seek licenses as integrated companies performing multiple functions.

Jefferson County had 28 applications, the most of any county. Madison County had 19 applications, and Montgomery County had 14.

All of the companies that requested applications will receive them by October 24th and are given until the end of the year to complete them. Then, licenses will be issued in the Summer of 2023, and medical marijuana products could be available to patients by the end of the year. Medical marijuana is a slow and steady process, but it’s finally happening!

Counties in Support of the Program

Individual counties have a say in whether or not they want to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to operate. Just this Tuesday, Houston County joined the list of counties who approve of medical marijuana operations. So, businesses and entities can now apply for medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the county.

Based on what we’ve seen in other states, medical marijuana can provide great tax revenue for the counties involved. It’s expected that more counties will join before the launch of the program.

Since business applications began this month, nobody has been approved yet. However, by showing support for the program early, these counties can get ahead of the curve and be ready for when applications are approved.

More counties are beginning to join the movement, as the city of Dothan will be voting on the approval of medical cannabis operations at its September 28th meeting.

Medical Marijuana Is Coming!

Based on the current timeline and the speed of these applications, patients with qualifying conditions should be able to purchase marijuana products from dispensaries by the end of next year. Safe and natural relief in Alabama is coming soon!
