There is big news for Alabama residents who want to use medical marijuana! As of September 1st, the medical cannabis licensing process has begun. This means that businesses can officially begin the application process to become marijuana cultivators, processors, dispensaries, and more. Alabamians are closer than ever to dispensaries opening and having access to this safe, natural medicine!
The Details
Under the state’s medical marijuana law, applicants who submit a request by October 17th will receive a business application form. They will then have until December 30th to file the application.
The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission is allowed to award 12 cultivator licenses, four processor licenses, four dispensary licenses, five integrated facilities licenses, and numerous secure transport and state testing laboratories licenses. The price of each license depends on the category of license and ranges from $10,000 to $50,000. We are hopeful that the number of licenses awarded will increase significantly once the medical marijuana program is up and running. But for now, this is a good start!
Cities Involved
Tuscaloosa is one of many cities that approved dispensaries. Revenue from the medical marijuana program in Tuscaloosa specifically will go towards the city’s public safety fund, as well as efforts to move police and firemen to the state retirement system. We can assume that other cities that participate in the program will put the money towards similar efforts.
Be Prepared to Get Relief!
Based on the current timeline, patients with a qualifying condition should be able to purchase products from licensed dispensaries some time next year. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally coming soon!
